Hey everyone,
I haven't really done ortho since I was a student, so I haven't encountered
this before.
I woke up this morning with this problem. When I flex my left hip, it hurts
very proximally, just below the skin fold at the top of the leg, and it does
start to ache further down the front of my thigh after I do a lot with it..
It feel sharp, like a pinch. It is a painful arc--approx. 30-90 degrees.
Active only. When I squat, the pain doesn't occur, so this is the best
approximation of PROM I can do for myself. On palpation, it seems like it may
be the rectus femoris, as the pain is different with I press on the tendon and
flex my hip. Consequently, my gait is affected, with a very short stride
length on the left, as swing is limited by the pain. Left stance is not
bothered; weight bearing is not a problem.
So, my thinking at this point (with my very limited ortho experience), is that
I somehow strained my rectus femoris or inflammed the tendon while I was
sleeping last night. I usually sleep on my stomach, slightly toward right
sidelying, with my left leg flexed, so my knee is level with or a little
higher than my hips. I don't know if I did anything strange while I was
sleeping, obviously.
I plan to take some NSAID after I finish breakfast (my current task). Then I
drive 30 minutes (with a clutch--I'm dreading that drive) to and from school.
I'll be sitting most of the day, fortunately. I am an acute care PT, though,
so I really need to get back to normal quickly. I don't know if I'll be a big
help to my patients in this condition. I even considered crutches for myself
to avoid needed a swing phase, but that's a bit excessive at this time.
If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know, either on the list or
personally. Thank you for this input.
