Chrysostom's Constantinople was hit by a series of earthquakes, some
devastating, some more psychologically upsetting than actually damaging.
He encourages the faithful to treat an earthquake as an sign of the
imminence of the end and imagine oneself entering the court of the last
judgment. We have a description from a pagan in C at the time of one of
these, and he describes running thru the streets with the inhabitants
prostrate on the ground. Very interesting form of apocalyptic pastoral
counseling.
