Greetings, list
I'd be grateful if anyone could help with some information about Elizabeth
Parkin (in Yorkshire) and her business ventures in the south west of
England. The information I have, follows but I'd appreciate any filling of
gaps - particularly anything to do with the Bristol business, its location,
value and what happened to it after John Parkin's death
John Parkin, born in 1678 in Sheffield. He became a ship's chandler in
Bristol and married Ann Worgan. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Ann.
He may have been connected with the Woolley gunpowder mill near Bath. He
died in 1733 (?), possibly intestate. There do seem to be strong links to
the Oborne and Gunning families of south Yorkshire.
William Parkin, born in 1676 in Sheffield but became an ironmonger in
Foster Lane, London. He made William Sitwell a partner, the business being
renamed Parkin and Sitwell. Parkin retired in 1741, leaving his niece
Elizabeth to run the business with Sitwell. Parkin died, unmarried in
1748.
Thanks in anticipation
Marjie
