lis-bailer members will be aware that the members of the RAE panel for
Library and Information management have recently been announced. I thought
it would be interesting to check their publication and citation counts, as
they will be assessing us in the near future!
I did author searches on each of them using SCI and SSCI on BIDS, and
de-duplicated any duplicates. I did citation studies on them as well,
again using the same sources and again de-duplicating any hits. I looked
for articles published 1996-9, and citations they received 1996-9. I did
NOT include reviews written by others of books panel members had written as
citations to them, and did not include book reviews panel members had
written themselves as articles they had written. Here are the results:
ARTICLES PUBLISHED CITATIONS RECEIVED
J. Elkin 2 4
J. Day 1 3
J. Feathyer 2 5
C. Harris 0 1
J. Haythornthwaite 0 0
C. Kitching 0 0
R. Paul 4 0
A. Thurston 1 1
T. Wood-Harper 3 0
{C. Oppenheim 20 12}
As a comparison, I have included results for myself, not because I am on
some ego trip, but as a bench mark lis-bailer readers may be
interested in. I realise I may not be typical!
I know about the weaknesses and deficiencies of citation counting as a
measure, the fact that SCI and SSCI do not cover every relevant source,
etc. etc. Even bearing those caveats in mind, I think these results
tell us something about the individuals who are assessing the quality of
our research output.
