*****************************************************
Beyond Knowledge Management: Managing Expertise
===============================================
*****************************************************
to be held on September 13 at the European Conference on Computer
Supported Cooperative Work 1999 (ECSCW'99) in Copenhagen, Denmark,
September 12 - 19, 1999.
Workshop Organizers:
Mark S. Ackerman, University of California, Irvine, USA
Andrew L. Cohen, Lotus Research, Cambridge, Mass., USA
Volkmar Pipek, University of Bonn, Germany
Volker Wulf, University of Bonn, Germany
The workshop builds upon existing work on knowledge management systems
and organizational memories. Our intent is to deepen the discussion on
the systems and human procedures that incorporate and manage the
diverse expertise of organizational members. "Expertise Management"
focuses on the human components, the cognitive, social, cultural and
organizational aspects of knowledge work, as well as information
storage and retrieval issues. The workshop will bring together
researchers and practitioners from different disciplines in addition
to computer science, especially psychology, sociology, and
organizational science. In the workshop, we will mainly discuss the
following issues:
- What are practical experiences with knowledge/expertise management?
What are the success stories? What are the failures?
- What are the key questions for successful knowledge sharing in
organizations?
- Which results of the sociology of knowledge and from knowledge
theories that support the conceptualization of expertise management?
- What are the situations where tacit (versus explicit) knowledge is
more productive in solving the problem at hand?
- How can knowledge be best represented for inter-individual and
organization-wide sharing?
- How can tacit knowledge be shared without making it explicit?
- Can different tools supporting organizational memories be integrated
into one expertise management system?
- Can CSCW systems be used to enable expertise management? How?
- Are incentive systems helpful in expertise management? What do/should
they look like?
A book publication with selected papers is planned.
Participation in the workshop requires the submission of a position
paper, related to the workshop issues. Position papers submitted may be
one of the following two formats: Short descriptions (two to four
pages)
of practical experience and interest; and substantial research papers
(20 pages max.), to be considered for book publication. We solicit both
field studies and theoretical work as contributions to the workshop.
Papers should be created according to the ECSCW document style guide.
Selection of participants will be competitive, and based on the
position paper submissions. All position papers will be distributed in
advance of the workshop to all participants.
Submission Deadline: July 2, 1999
(E-Mail submission to [log in to unmask]; PDF, RTF or Postscript
