Greenwich was part of the massive industrial area around the Port of
London. As an industrial centre it developed early on through the
influence of the Royal Palace and the need for armaments. The Millennium
Dome site has been publicised as regenerating a polluted gasworks - but
Greenwich Marsh was home to far more than the most important gasworks in
the world! Blakeley Guns - Bessemer Steel - Maudslay tea clippers -
racing sailing barges - power station - tide mill - Richard Trevithick -
the Atlantic Cable - gas works waste and the chemical industry - coal
from Tyne and Wear and the coal trade. Regeneration through charitable
institutions and land use.
'Greenwich Marsh. The 300 Years Before the Dome' by Dr.Mary Mills traces
the history of the area from 1680 to the 1920s.
