Prospectus:
Thomas Mann and Music: From Wagner to Adorno
Music has played a conspicious role in Thomas Mann's work. Beginning
with Buddenbrooks and the early short stories, and extending through
Der Zauberberg to his late work, Dr. Faustus, the experience and
practice of music has been a source of constant fascination for Thomas
Mann in both his fictional and critical writings. This book will
present current views on the progress, development and integration of
Mann's radical deployment of music in his fictional world. The
importance of Nietzsche's and Schopenhauer's views on music, Mann's
abiding, if ambivalent, enthusiasm for Wagner's music and
compositional techniques, the incorporation of music theory in the
Faustus novel (in spite of his conservative musical tastes) will be
addressed. The significance of music in the work of Proust and Joyce
will also be considered by way of contrast and comparison.
