RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN DESIGN OPTIMISATION

There are THREE research positions currently available in Design
Optimisation area at Cranfield. Successful candidates are
expected to work closely with industry for applied research.
EPSRC FUNDED RESEARCH PROJECT:

PROJECT 1: Flexible Optimisation within the CAD/CAM Environment
Duration: TWO years, starting 1st Oct. 1999
Researchers: TWO
The research aims to develop a framework for ‘Flexible Optimisation in a
CAD/CAM Environment’. The flexible optimisation enables a CAD/CAM
environment to select appropriate optimisation techniques, and parameters
for an optimisation. The approach will help to handle different types of
optimisation, such as multiobjective, multimodal and constrained, within
the CAD/CAM System. The framework will be validated in a prototype, as
a decision support system, using a standard CAD/CAM system. The
multidisciplinary research will establish state of the art optimisation
capability within the leading design systems. The project will identify the
requirements for the ‘best practice’ within the manufacturing industry. The
multidisciplinary research will involve state of the art design optimisation
approaches in industry, evolutionary computing, and neutral Application
Programming Interface development. The research is funded by EPSRC
and is for TWO years. The project requires one Research Assistant
(RA) and one postdoctoral Research Officer (RO) for the two year period.
Starting salary (approx):
Research Assistant: £16K per year (REF: 9090A)
Research Officer: £19K per year (REF: 9091A)
The RA should have good academic background (mech/manuf eng.) + some
computer skills; programming knowledge and CAD/CAM background will
be preferred. The RO should have research experience (mech/manuf eng.)
+ software application knowledge + programming; knowledge of evolutionary
computing and CAD/CAM will be preferred. To discuss the research

ONE ENGINEERING DOCTORATE STUDENTSHIP

PROJECT 2: Development of a soft model approach for design optimisation
of rolling systems
Industrial Sponsor: Swindon Technology Centre, British Steel
Duration: FOUR Years, starting 1st Oct 1999
REF: CU1008
British Steel has developed a number of quantitative models to predict
and optimise product thermomechanical behaviour during rolling.
Although, the quantitative modelling addresses the accurate
predictions of key properties, other issues, potentially qualitative
such as manufacturability, repairability are not being addressed
at the moment for global optimisation. The project will therefore
be aimed at developing a knowledge based approach to capture
the qualitative knowledge and integrate with the existing
quantitative models. This will define a 'Soft Model' for the 'rolling
system' design. The study will exploit different knowledge
representation techniques including Fuzzy Logic, evolutionary
computing, and design optimisation approaches for the research.
The student would receive around £11-12K tax free pa. Interested graduate
students with mechanical/maufacturing engineering background and some
programming knowledge, with an interest in Design Optimisation, are

to the degree is an upper second class honours degree or its equivalent,
preferably followed by two or three years industrial experience. Please
