Good morning, community!
I`m Olga Barysheva from Systems Department of the National Library of
Russia in St.-Petersburg. I try to make clear something about Russian
DC versions you find out.
The ngo.org.ru version is the first independent elaboration of DC in
our country and also the first RDF XML-encoded one because the
extendible Markup Language unfortunately is yet not so popular as it
(I hope) must be. We are still need a good book of XML in Russian and
some guides in RDF, I think. I also find that ngo.org.ru RDF schema is
very useful and detailed but what we really need for start such
projects is to create a good template for those who know nothing (about
RDFs, XMLs, DCs :)
The www.rsl.ru (Russian State Library, Moscow) DC is the only
translation (nothing added) from purl.org. It is not a good one in
comparison with the original OCLC and the other English versions. The
library situation in our country is difficult because of the two
national libraries and the Book Chamber. Each organization want to
play the leading role in cataloguing processes. Now it is a time of
decision making for choosing a preferable way of operating with
Internet resources - whether it will be DC based on HTML or RUSMARC
application. Unfortunately the practice of META adding in HTML is also
poor until it will be accept as a national standard or recommendation.
In our Library we also only research the problem because we start
digitization process of our documents as a part of the "Meeting of
Frontiers" project with the Library of Congress. That`s why we
interested specially in schemas for "semantic poor" objects like
maps, photos, pictures etc. and for the collections as a whole.
That is why we`ll try to understand how to build in description the
notes on digitization technology used, compression scheme, formats of
files storage and delivery.
