***AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE URBAN GEOGRAPHY STUDY GROUP (UGSG)
OF THE INSTITUTE OF BRITISH GEOGRAPHERS***
To UK urban geographers, geographers who undertake urban-based
research, and others who may be interested:
I will be taking over as the Chair of the Urban Geography Study Group
at the IBG in January 2000. At this time we (the Urban Group) are
planning a massive revamp of the study group. Although the group
has a big membership it is functioning well below par. Other study
groups such as the Social and Cultural Group and the Feminist
Geography Group seem much more able to attract new blood and to
engage in fruitful meetings, edited collections, conferences, etc.
Likewise the American Urban Speciality Group seems to be operating
successfully. We are hoping that a revamping and relaunching of the
Urban Group, maybe with a new name, will make it a more satisfactory
study group.
As a starting point we would like to organise a panel session at this
year's IBG (2000)to discuss the 'identity' and future of the study
group.
There is no point me setting this up at this point if there is
not enough constructive interest - so please could I hear from those
who would be interested in being on the panel.
Ideally we would like a mix of ages and genders to harness a
reasonable 'sample' of urban geographers for the panel and we would
hope for a large participatory audience.
Please e-mail me asap if you are interested, as I need to get a space
set aside in the IBG timetable.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this message,
Loretta Lees.
