Seeing as the current discussion on the forum is about the
exclusive nature of sport, I thought it may be appropriate
(particularly in reference to David Crouch's suggestion of
a symposium on the subject) to announce our forthcoming
conference "LEISURE and EXCLUSION" to be held on
Thursday, September 2, 1999 at the Geography Division,
Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DE (details
below).
Just thinking about it, we haven't "excluded" sport from
the conference, but no-one offered a paper discussing this
aspect. I am also in agreement with the comments posted so
far. Sport is inherently exclusive seeing as there are
strict gender divisions, age limits etc. on any number of
pursuits. Even at local primary school level, boys and
girls are regularly separated and there's always stories in
newspapers about a girl who is the school's best soccer
player and not allowed to play....
Anyway, papers confirmed for the LEISURE and EXCLUSION
conference draw upon both British and international
perspectives and cover a range of themes and issues,
including:
Theoretical and conceptual approaches to leisure and
exclusion
exclusion and disability
exclusion in the National Parks of England and Wales
access to the countryside
ethnicity and recreation
use of urban space by young people
public houses as leisure locations
For more details, please contact either myself (Dr. Euan
Hague) before 20 June or Dr. Stephen Williams thereafter.
Conference fee is £40 (£15 for students) and includes
buffet lunch and refreshments and copies of all papers.
