There is more to sport than competition & ability (as has been noted
before). Lot's of sports have become popular for their sociability
and almost anit-competitive ethos (eg Ultimate Frisbee). Alternative
sports such as ulitmate frisbee, mountain biking, snowboarding,
climbing, canoeoing are geared towards acheiving personal goals with
like-minded people (at least that is what the marketeers would have
us believe). For these sorts of activities the spirituality/sociability of
these pursuits is paramount (I have met many zen climbers during my
time in Scotland!).
For sports like climbing & canoeing, there is an additional interest
in defeating and controlling nature through the use of technique and technology.
