FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Time: 18-19 September, 1999
Venues: Department of Chemistry, University of Sussex, Brighton.
Conference Theme: Chemistry and the Knowledge Innovation in China

Conference Highlight:
(1) Invited Plenary Lectures (speakers of these lectures in 1997 and 1998
included Prof. ZHANG Cunhao, Head of the National Natural Science
Foundation, China, and Dr. John Walker, Winner of the1997 Nobel Chemistry
Prize)
(2) Oral presentations
(3) Poster presentations
(4) Competition for the "CSCST Merit Awards" and "SCICS Poster Awards"
(5) Conference dinner
(6) Seaside activities
(7) After conference publication in <<Progress in Natural Science>>.

Dear All,

This is the first circular and call for papers for the joint annual
conference of CSCST and SCICS at the Department of Chemistry, University of
Sussex, Brighton on 18-19 September, 1999.  Please note that this conference
will be the last CSCST and SCICS party before the millennium arrives and
Brighton is a beautiful coast city. It is so, don't miss it!

This conference will be organised by a Local Organising Committee (headed by
Dr. Junliang Zhou) with the full support of the CSCST Executive Committee
and CSICS Committee. The conference will also have the financial support
from the following sponsors

National Natural Science Foundation, China ,
The Education Section, Chinese Embassy, London,
Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), London

As always, the conference topics include chemical, materials, environmental,
biological science, technology and engineering, and other related subjects.
Your ticket for the conference is a one-page (one or double sides) camera
ready abstract which should be sent before 1st August 1999 to

To assist your participation to this conference, we would appreciate your
completion of the email registration form at the end of this message and
return it by email as soon as possible to Dr. Zheng Chen

Although the final details about the conference are pending, your attention
is drawn to the following two points

(1) The conference calls for competition for the "CSCST Merit Awards" and
"SCICS Outstanding Poster Awards".  In the previous two joint annul
conferences,  these awards were sponsored by the Education Section, Chinese
Embassy and Society of Chemical Industry.  More than 20 people have received
these awards with the total amount of the prizes being over 1000 sterling
pounds.  All the prizes included a certificate issued by CSCST or SCICS and
a present or a cheque (amount dependent on the award position and
sponsorship). These awards include

CSCST Merit Awards
(1) Merit Awards of  Publications (1~2)
(2) Merit Awards of References (1~2)
(3) Merit Award of Achievements (1~2)
(4) Merit Award of Serving China (1~2)

SCICS Outstanding Poster Awards
First Award: 1~2 (140 pounds in 1998)
Second Award: 2~3 (100 pounds in 1998)
Third Award: 3~5 (40 pounds in 1998)

(2) After the conference, authors are invited to submit their full papers to
"Progress in Natural Science", a prestigious and comprehensive academic
journal
which is sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and
published monthly by Science in China Press and Taylor & Francis Ltd.
