You are invited to the Interact '99 Workshop (Monday 30th August 1999,
Edinburgh, www.bcs.org.uk/hci/i99):
** Is Cognitive Engineering the way forward for HCI?
This workshop investigates the definitions and approaches adopted in
Cognitive Engineering and discusses how this field may contribute to HCI in
the future. Cognitive Engineering has grown out of applied psychology and
ergonomics studies of complex systems, frequently in safety critical
domains such as air traffic control and nuclear power. An ESRC research
programme has recently been completed which brought together computer
scientists, designers, psychologists, and sociologists in collaborative
research on this theme. The workshop will review the history and relation
of HCI research with cognitive science, and then examine the development of
Cognitive Engineering and its potential in the short and longer term.
Delegates are asked to submit position papers (2-3 pages) that address the
development of Cognitive Engineering and its potential in the short and
longer term. The position papers will be made available before the
workshop (probably on the Web). A summary of the position papers will be
presented at the workshop to promote discussion. Please send position
papers to Adam Stork at the address below or by email to [log in to unmask]
