CUI, GUI or Web: Methodology
There are a number of distinct styles that could be used when designing
software
user interfaces. Often, character based interfaces are being discarded in
favor
of graphical user interfaces, or Web based interfaces. Unfortunately, the
decision on interface style is not always undertaken by a user interface
specialist. The fad of the day sometimes dictates the look-and-feel to the
detriment of the intended users. Our contention is that each interface style
can be advantageous to the user if used in the appropriate context.
The focus of this workshop will be on understanding:
· The unique characteristics of each interface style: Character (CUI),
Graphical (GUI) and Web.
· Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the different interface
styles.
· Enumerating the questions a designer can ask to help guide them into
making
the appropriate decisions.
· Construction of a job-aid (decision tree) to help guide decision
makers to
choose the appropriate interface style.
The workshop will consist of fifteen to twenty participants demonstrating
solid
experience with designing in at least one style of interface. The
organizers of
this workshop will attempt to ensure that participants represent different
styles. Participants will be expected to submit:
1. A case study describing the style?s and rationale?s of interfaces that
have
been most commonly used by the prospective participant.
2. A description of some of the products designed by the prospective
participant and any user feedback pertaining to interface appropriateness.
3. Discussion points which could include: techniques used to gauge
appropriate
interface style, a negatively received interface and the inferred lessons.
Applicants should include names and contact information, and a one paragraph
biographical sketch.
Submissions are due July 15, 1999
