Hello all,
Just felt the urge to make a quick response to Gavin's comments:

I don't know anything about Lacrosse, but it strikes me that many sports these
days seem to be capital intensive in one way or another! e.g. team sports demand
kits, training shoes, equipment etc, whilst exercise classes / gym membership
costs money. Actually watching live sports is also increasingly expensive -
football matches are not exactly cheap, so I hear!
> Lacrosse has been / is symbolically for a particular class faction.
So should class divisions be just left as they are? Should no attempt be made to
challenge them?

You could make a similar argument about classical music - traditionally a middle
class preserve, but when I was at comprehensive school the loan of expensive
musical instruments to schoolkids plus free tuition opened music up to children
who might never have had the chance otherwise. OK, so lots of them gave up/got
bored but at least they had the opportunity to try something new....(from what I hear
this chance is being whittled away through funding cuts)
What do you want to do? take marginalised kids out from

> other middle/upper class sports.
Isn't this making assumptions about what 'marginalised kids' want and who they
are? Maybe boys want to play football (it's still a male-dominated sport) but what
about the girls? They might not want to, or they might be marginalised from it in
any case. What about the boys who aren't interested in footie? Shouldn't kids
have a choice?
Surely sport is for all - no matter where you come from ??
