*Technologies for Change within the Roman Empire*
Louise Chalkley (University of Wales, Lampeter)
Technological advancements within the Roman Empire have usually been
dealt with by archaeologists within fairly rigid traditional and
processual frameworks. This session at TAG ' 99 provides an exciting
opportunity for exploring Roman technological phenomena from
heterogeneous perspectives that seek to include gender and social
relations within the technological axioms of Roman archaeology. Papers
are welcomed that aim to include philosophical, sociological or
political aspects of the effects of technology on the Empire,
particularly those focused upon the effect that changes within the
Empire had upon technology- and vice versa. Abstracts are required by
the end of August.
*Session Abstract*
Much Roman archaeology has been located in cultural-historical or
processual archaeologies. The session Technologies for Change within the
Roman Empire' however aims to focus upon an alternative approach to
considering the role of technology within the Empire, and analysing its
effect within a socio-cultural frame work. This will encompass not only
the relationship between technology and people but also the intricate
mechanisms at play between associated technologies. 'Technologies'
include a broad spectrum of data that ranges from the technologies of
industry such as engineering and technologies of domination such as
slavery, together with the variety of forces arising from political
technologies. Papers are invited from theoretical perspectives covering
areas such as the innovation and development of technology, the
utilisation of technical apparatuses and resources, and the exploitation
of techniques of domination, control and general social interaction. The
aim of the session will be to provide an in-depth analysis of the role
of technology within the Roman Empire and the changes that it inspired,
either advantageously- or to its detriment.
