[log in to unmask]: Wells in Churches
>From my research I know of :
Becket’s Well in the Choir of Canterbury Cathedral. Lost of course, and said
to flow red.
Another Becket’s Well, under the church of Bramfield..see my article on Holy
Wells and Folklore waters Hertfordshire Past 43/44.( available Wynels,
Little Cokenach, Nuthampstead, Royston, SG8 8LS )
The font of the church is said to flow into it and the structure is
basically still there. It overflowed once and strange ghostly noises were
heard from the crypt. This was because all the coffins were floating around
and banging into each other!
There are springs beneath Redwell Church Essex and Holybourne’s church they
arise above and below it.
St. Olave’s Church, near Tower Green has the well of St. Olave in its crypt
and is freely visible although no capped.
St. Bride’s Church similarly is situated over St. Bride’s Well, although I
think this was not originally so with the mediaeval church.
My mind is searching for some others I know of but can’t think...I know of a
couple that actually arise in people’s cellars!!!
Incidently if theere’s anything you need to know about holy wells in Kent,
Essex, Herts and much of the home counties drop me a line.
Hopefully, I will be able to make my Kent Holy Wells work available when it
gets published.
