***Exactly! Do what many of us do - never ever open any attachments from
anyone - simply ask them nicely to re-send you the attachment by pasting it
into the main body of the email. Of course, that means that they cannot send
you graphic information, so let them send that via snail mail or FAX. Rather
a bit of inconvenience than a lot more misery if a virus infects your system
Another hint for those who live in countries which charge for local telephone
access to the Internet, never waste time typing in real time unless it is a
very short message. Instead, compose your messages off-line in any word
processing package and then paste them later into the main message part of
your email. Thus, you can send messages which would normally cost you 2
hours of online time in just a few minutes.
If you wish to save time and money in accessing the web and you don't have
any real need for pretty pictures and other images, then switch off the
AutoLoad Graphics or Images facility of your web browser (Netscape or
Explorer). For those who are more technically minded, you can create fairly
large (say 10Mb) RAM disc and have the web browser download data to this
virtual disc and speed the process up a lot.
One obvious tip which folk raise occasionally is to give each email that you
write a very specific and clear heading, not some general title like" Help
Needed", "No Title", "Student Project", or "Re:Re: Re: Sandra's Post".
This enables readers to delete items which obviously are of no interest to
them.
Anyway, the use of general or non-existent titles makes filing of messages a
total misery, so what I do is forward a copy of any mail like that to myself
under a heading of my own choice (retaining the author's email address) and
delete the original. Later I create special folders to organise all of my
stored mail.
There are several other hints like that, but these I have found to be amongst
the easiest and most useful for anyone to use. Other members of this group
may have other personal useful 'tricks' to share.
