Hi,
I am researching the French prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars
(1805 - 1815).
I have discovered that they were put into "parole towns" around the UK
and have found that some had so much freedom, that they were able to
meet and marry the local girls and start families. Some even had their
servants with them.
I am trying to discover how many "parole towns" there were in all, and
if they all had the same numbers (100 or so in a couple of places) of
prisoners, and whether the prisoners all had the same amount of
liberty!!
I am also trying to establish how many of these prisoners decided to
stay in the UK after they became free men.
It has been difficult to find information about all this, so I would
appreciate it if anyone can suggest any books or sources that I might
check, and if anyone knows that their town used to be a "parole town".
Many thanks,
Warmest regards,
