Thanks for the advice regarding my query on definitions of
artisans/mechanics. I have read the chapter you recommended
and found it useful, particularly the reference to 'The
Journeyman Engineer' Thomas Wright. I'll be checking this
out in June when I visit the V&A archives.
One other point - I have passed a copy of the Friendly
Societies Newsletter on to the Education Officer of
Wolverhampton County Archives. Her MA was an examination of
'Women's Friendly Societies in Staffordshire' and she seems
keen to continue with this piece of research. I thought I
would let you know about this in case she contacts you.
