The Rules of Huddersfield Mechanics' Institution, started in 1841 as the Young Men's Mental Improvement Society, state the following:
'This Institution offers to the Public, and especially to the Working Classes, the opportunity of instruction in the following branches of knowledge, viz :---Reading,Writing.Arithmetic,Book-Keeping.Grammar. Vocal and Instrumental Music, Geography, History, French, German, Chemistry, Design, Ornamental Drawing. Mechanical Drawing and Architectural Drawing.'
