SilverPlatter has been serving the needs of the UK Higher Education
community for many years, providing access to an extensive and
comprehensive range of authoritative databases. Access to the range of
SilverPlatter databases is available today in a variety of ways including
local Intranet, and Internet access, as well as via Z39.50 clients.
Information is increasingly available in digital form, to supplement
print-based collections, and the challenge today is to operate effectively
within a hybrid information environment. Secondary data sources, such as
those provided by SilverPlatter, are pivotal in this hybrid environment as
is the ability to navigate seamlessly from these to locate and access the
primary content itself.
Primary content is increasingly available through a combination of
traditional locally held print sources and locally and remotely held
electronic journals to which libraries have subscribed. These options
often need to be supplemented by requests to a variety of document
delivery services. Silverplatter'’s SilverLinker suite of technology
offers integration of these information resources. Key to this
integration is the use of standards and the implementation of common
protocols such as Z39.50 and HTTP.
SilverPlatter recognises that to achieve the goal of seamless integration
of these options requires significant collaboration and partnerships.
With this in mind SilverPlatter has been actively participating in a
number of past and present eLib projects listening to the aims and needs
of our partners and contributing our expertise and technology as
appropriate.
We currently have formal representation on the HeadLine and AGORA Hybrid
Library projects and have been associated with a number of other e-Lib
projects eg. FIDDO and EDDIS. We have also actively participated in the
development of the MODELS information architecture.
If as eLib project members or others interested in ideas like the hybrid
library, you would be interested in further developing partnerships or
exploring areas of collaboration with SilverPlatter we would be delighted
to hear from you.
