No, you are not alone. I find that I miss the ability to get some sense
of the whole with many internet documents. Browsing a book or article,
one can always be aware of where one is in relation to the whole, and
judge easily whether the browsing is "shallow" or "deep." I've found with
Internet Archaeology that I rely very heavily on the tables of contents,
which go some way to giving me a similar sense.
The non-linear structure doesn't bother me if I have a sufficient sense of
the whole.
