Russel:
The US Medical Expenditure Survey, Nursing Home Component, has a
sample of US nursing home residents and among other things, reports
demographic info, health and functioning characteristics, and
diagnoses of those residents.
The US HCFA Medicare/Medicaid statistical supplement has Medicare
covered days of care by demographic characteristics, and separately by
principal diagnosis (MDC). For example, the 1997 supplement reports on
1993 data. You might also try the HCFA web site for more recent info.

Chris

All,
Does anyone know if estimates are available for the average length of stay
in a US nursing home, by age of patient and primary diagnosis at time of
admission? The National Nursing Home Survey could be one possible data
source to do this.
Thanks,
rtb
