Dear all
My apologies for those not interested in the subject of deriving a
preference-based single index from the SF-36 (sometimes referred to
as health state utilities) read no further! For those of you with
SF-36 data or considering including the SF-36 and wish to use it in
an economic evaluation read on.........
Dear David
You will see from the attached copy of a paper recently published in
the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology that we have estimated utlity
weights for responses to the SF-36 (Brazier JE, Harper R, Thomas K,
Jones N Underwood T (1998) Deriving a preference based single index
measure from the SF-36 J.Clinical Epidemiology 51 (11):1115-1129).
The details of the methods and results are set out in that paper.
The study reported in that paper has become a pilot for a study which
we are currently conducting based on a valuation survey of around 600
members of the general population. The results of this main study
should become available in the near future. I shall send
you further information as and when it becomes available.
Should you choose to apply the utility based algorithm in the JCE
paper to your data then you will need an short SPSS computer
programme. This is freely available for non-commercial purposes (e.g.
Government or charity funded activities).
I have a keen academic interest in seeing the algorithm
applied and would be very interested in finding out a bit more
about the application - such the disease group, treatment and any
published results. Thanks.
