THE 7TH ISSEI CONFERENCE

The University of Bergen, Norway is, in cooperation with ISSEI
(International Society for the Study of European Ideas), staging the
seventh ISSEI conference Approaching a New Millenium: Lessons from the Past
- Prospects for the Future, in Bergen from the 14th to the 18th of August
2000.
TOPICS-SECTIONS

We expect 1500 participants who will take part in about 150 different
workshops. The workshops will be grouped into five sections:
I. Democracy: Possibilities, Problems and Challenges at the Close of the
20th Century.

II. Law, Civilised Societies and Collapse - State Powers and the Rule of Law.
Section cooridinator Associate Professor Terje Einarsen
III. Europe in Search of Identity: Multi-Ethnicity, Migration and the
Challenges of Integration.

IV. European Identity and its Expression in the Philosophy, Science,
Literature and Art.
Section cooridinator Professor Ezra Talmor
V. European Education - Decline, Market Adaption or Critical Continuity.
Section cooridinator Associate Professor Daniel Apollon
CALL FOR CHAIRS

There is a section coordinator for each section. If you are interested in
chairing a workshop within one of these sections please send us a workshop
proposal of 1-2 pages describing the purpose of the workshop before May 31.
Please send us your workshop proposal by e-mail or on a disc (standard
file format). You can also use the form at our website on
http://www.uib.no/issei2000. This gives you the opportunity to send the
proposal via Internet.
The chairs will be selected by the scientific committee, which consists of
the sections coordinators.
CALL FOR PAPERS

If you are interested in participating in a workshop, the announcement of
call for papers will be ready in August/September 1999.
GRANTS

ISSEI 2000 har applayed for a limited number of grants for participants
from Eastern Europe. As soon as a decision has been made, details will be
made available at our website or you can contact the conference secretariat.
