For the information of those on the list, a sociological research
organisation with which our research group are in contact conducted a
representative sample survey of 1000 respondents in the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia in Spring 1998 - before the war broke out. At that time around
40% of the citizens supported Milosovic, about 40% opposed him and about
20% were undecided. Therefore, less than half the population of Serbia and
Montenegro were behind their leader at that time. It would be interesting
to know what the effects of this war has been on such opposition. My guess
is that the war would have rallied support around Milosovic rather than the
contrary, to judge by the message from Prof. Nedovic and from other Serbian
friends and colleagues of ours. This is quite the opposite to what
Clinton, Blair et al. are aiming to do. Not only is this war a
humanitarian tragedy but it would seem to be counter productive in terms of
its own aims.
