[message posted to dc-general and dc-implementors - hopefully it's
relevant to both audiences; apologies to those of you on both lists]
We've just updated our pages on using the ROADS subject gateway toolkit
for the management of Dublin Core metadata for local resources.
See:
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/roads/metadata-mgmt/
The pages describe an integrated approach to creating, managing
and deploying Dublin Core metadata for a local web site.
Metadata is stored in a ROADS database which means that the ROADS
toolkit can be used to provide a search interface and that metadata can
be made available for cross-searching by other ROADS/WHOIS++ services.
Metadata is dynamically extracted from the ROADS database and embedded
in web pages (as HTML meta tags or RDF/XML) using SSI. Metadata authors
have a toolbar button on their browser to enable them to move directly
from the current web page to its metadata for editing (or generation
then editing for new resources).
The described approach is currently being used for the eLib web site at:
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/services/elib/
The approach is based on freely available open source tools. The
extensions to ROADS that have been developed at UKOLN will either be
included in a future release of ROADS or provided as add-ons as
appropriate.
The web pages also include a discussion of the potential for this
approach as a DC-in-a-Box, the need for which was raised on
dc-implementors by Stu Weibel [1].
We'd like to develop this approach further, especially adding support
for qualified Dublin Core.
Tracy
