Database with metadata exporting functions http://www.alcarta.com
------------------------------------------
(Not commercial, despite the .COM)
The general idea is to manage a metadata repository in an appropriate
database. The "allegro" database system is capable of handling large amounts
of metadata (catalog data) and to export records in any format. Editing,
indexing and exporting are all configurable, as well as the internal format
used for storing the data.
"allegro" is used in several hundred German libraries as a catalog database
and OPAC plus many other functions.
We now make a version available that contains the latest Windows program and
a demo database of Web resources, together with parametrization (all in
English) that enables input and editing of data. Output (Export) is possible
in HTML or RDF with DC tagging. The export parameters are in plain ASCII
files and can be extended in any desired way. (Files E-DCHTML.APR and E-
DCRDF.APR) The demo database is not MARC but much simpler.
You can also download a database of electronic journals containing some
15.000 records.
If anyone is interested in developing this further into a flexible metadata
management facility with all features needed in practical setups, please
contact me.
(The complete package is much larger than what we make available now)
"a99" is a Windows based database browsing and editing program to be used
with "allegro" databases.
"allegro" is fully configurable, its internal format can be MARC but also
any other format.
http://www.alcarta.com
is now the homepage of the latest product line, "alcarta" being the
new OPAC program and database browser for Win'95 and NT. "a99" is the
same, *plus* the editing functions.
Click on the Union Jack to get the English page, or go straight to
http://www.biblio.tu-bs.de/allegro/alcarta/elcarta.htm
You need: Win'95 or NT, Screen resolution 800x600 or higher.
------------ -------
(The present installation works on '95/98 only, we'll have NT ready next
week)
On the download page, find:
1. The basic a99 program package
Start A99D.EXE on your Win'95 or NT system. It unwraps to C:\ALLEGRO
(unless you change that to another drive in the install shield procedure)
Two fonts will be installed, containing special characters.
(A-TIMES.TTF and A-LETTER.TTF)
This contains a small demo database COOL, installed on C:\ALLEGRO\COOL
2. The EJO database of electronic journals
Start EJO.EXE, it will unwrap to c:\allegro\ejo
After installation, you can start the EJO database by
a9 ejo
or the COOL demo database by
a9 cool
entered on c:\allegro
A9.BAT is a batch file. Comments in it tell you how to modify it.
Use F1 for help in all situations, plus the [?] button for database help.
Please get in touch if something goes wrong, there is certainly a need
for improvements.
