As you know, there are a number of data elements in MARC which are in
fact metadata about the record rather than the resource, including the
creation and update dates, the "modified record", cataloging source,
descriptive cataloging form, encoding level, and other fixed fields,
as well as the entire 040 field. It's a salutary reminder, given our
current discussions, that theoretically pure metadata design and real,
working metadata bear only a passing relationship to each other.
