Mathwise User Group Workshop
University of Bristol Wednesday 23 June 1999
This is the third Mathwise User Group workshop to be run by the
new MWUG committee. The day will include a general introduction
to Mathwise and the MWUG and talks by various authors and
users. There will also be an opportunity for delegates to participate
in a hands-on session and contribute to a discussion on the future
development of the group.
Programme
10:30 - 11:00 Arrival, registration, tea and coffee
11:00 - 11:10 Introduction - Mike Barry, University of Bristol and
Greig Fratus, CTI Mathematics
11:10 - 11:40 "Diagnostic tests for freshers" - Martin Greenhow,
Brunel University
"Objective tests via computer work best when the subject matter is
broken down into elementary skills so that weaknesses can be
identified unambiguously and feedback given which is appropriate
to the student's choice or input. Mathletics seeks to do this and
the results of such diagnostic tests can result in a personalised
study plan through the pre-calculus cluster and other Mathwise
units."
11:40 - 12:10 "Motivating Students to use Computer Based
Support and Lecturers to Help One Another" - Jon Sims Williams,
University of Bristol
12:10 - 12:40 "Extending the Power and Accessibility of Mathwise"
- Mike McCabe, University of Portsmouth
"a) With linked computer algebra:
The Differential Vector Calculus module is one of of three Mathwise
modules which exploit Mathedge, the Maple kernel. The result is a
higher level of algebraic interactivity and more sophisticated
graphics than in other modules.
b)By on-line cross-referencing:
University of Portsmouth students are able to relate Mathwise
(CALMAT and Transmath) material to first year maths units on-line.
By cross referencing topics studied in these units with the available
CBL material they can identify which modules and learning units
are most useful to them.

c.) With on-line assessment:
Some first year assessment of mathematics is delivered, marked
and reported on-line. e.g.

A few Mathwise questions have been tried out on-line."
12:40 - 13:40 Lunch
13:45 - 14:00 Introduction to the Mathwise Pre-Calculus Cluster -
Martin Greenhow, Brunel University
14:00 - 15:30 Hands-on Software Session
15:30 - 15:45 Open discussion forum over tea
The day will take place at the University of Bristol. Full travelling
instructions and a campus map can be found at the University of
Bristol website (http://www.bris.ac.uk/). The fee for the workshop,
including lunch, is £45 for non Mathwise User Group members (this
includes automatic membership of the group) and £15 for Mathwise
User Group members. Those wishing to attend should inform
MWUG as soon as possible. Bookings can be made by email to
[log in to unmask] or by completing an online form
(http://mat-nt2.bham.ac.uk/mwug/f-bristol.htm). However, payment
is required in advance, cheques should be made payable to the
