Judging by the numbers of geographers attending the Hawaii AAG meetings -
and members of the list I later spied enjoying the islands, like me - it
might be a while before geographers stop such 'wasteful' overseas visits!
My 'carbon allowance' for this year is certainly used up now.
As for supermarkets - the battle seems to bave been lost. Hawaii
was a particularly depressing place for that, with an erosion of locally
produced food to under 20% of all that sold, and dominance of US mainland
suppliers and outlets. Again, in Boulder, CO - the so-called 'alternative'
town where I lived, there are now huge organic/health food supermarkets
owned by chains, which have siezed the market. Tesco in the UK this month
replaced its organic milk supplier with its 'own brand', and continues to
niche-market its products in a quite cynical fashion. The key thing is,
however, to keep the pressure on, about supply chains, profits, quality,
and other things - as Tim Lang says.
But roll on the bootsale, allotment, and small trader culture in Britain -
it won't die out. (the first two are especially suited to academic pay
scales, too).
