The Department of Computing has full-time PhD studentships funded by the
EPSRC and BBSRC available for three years from October 1999. The
Department has an excellent success rate in supervision and a number of
active research groups within the areas detailed below. Applicants
should have at least a 2(i) honours degree or a recognised postgraduate
qualification.
EPSRC
Applications are invited in any of the following areas: software
internationalisation; quantitative studies of student project success;
observational studies of student learning within an electronic tuition
environment; mechanical proof of reasoning within classical numerical
analysis applied to safety- critical systems; computer-based systems to
facilitate aspects of musical exploration; distributed event management
in mobile computer systems; and the development of formal composition
languages based on the pi-calculus for frameworks.
Further information from Professor D.C.Ince, Department of Computing,
Faculty of Mathematics & Computing, Open University, Walton Hall, Milton

BBSRC
Applications are invited for an interdisciplinary research studentship
between The Open University and The Natural History Museum for the
project "A language for link types in taxonomic databases". Species
names and the relationships between them change through time because of
advances in knowledge. The aim of the studentship is to capture these
changes by developing a model of species names, their relationships and
how they change. A prototype will be implemented during the studentship
that will serve as a test-bed for the model.
Candidates should have a strong background in computer science with some
interest in biology. Further information from Dr David Morse, Department
of Computing, Faculty of Mathematics & Computing, Open University,
Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA or e-mail: [log in to unmask],
phone: 01908 858463.
For an application form and prospectus please phone 0870 900 0308 or
e-mail CES- [log in to unmask] Please quote ref no. RD99F.
Please note that applicants for these studentships must satisfy
EPSRC/BBSRC eligibility rules regarding residency (see EPSRC web site
http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/ , BBSRC web site http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/ ).
