Dear Ann Seymour
Get someone to transcribe some of your local Court Rolls. Lots of
interesting info.
Sample extract from Manor Court roll of my village of Buckland Monachorum
in Devon, for 27/11/1602:
Bailiff presented that two white ewes strayed on to the barton of Thomas
Drake on the 7th of May last. Now cameJohn Sawdye and and proved the
aforesaid sheep to be indeed his own by his oath which was affirmed by
Bartholomew Sawdye and gave to the lord for his proof 7pence according to
custom and they were released to him.
In the 15th and 16th centuries the fine was 4 pence.
