Assuming you are using the latest version of Access Access 97
then any problems are likely to be due to physical diskspace rather than
access. The maximum size of a database is 1 GB with no limits on
the number of records within the database. I wrote a multiuser database
at work for a booking system which at times has had > 10,000 records and
during the day is modified several times a minute. The only problems
were due to incompatiblities between the Novell network and Access 2.0
Out of interest, how are your rationalising surnames - manually or
do you use something like soundex or metaphone?
