Dear everyone,

(Sorry if you get this more than once - unavoidable due to
cross-posting)

Here at South Bank we are developing a multi-lingual web search engine
(MUSE) and are looking for a post doc research fellow. There are many
areas to this project, so enthusiasm and the ability to publish are high
on our wish list. Ideally you would have experience of learning (or
trying to learn) more than one natural language and the ability to
program in (or learn) Prolog, JAVA and ToolBook.

The details are below. If interested please email me ([log in to unmask])
and I'll get back to you.

SCHOOL OF COMPUTING, INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND MATHEMATICS

RESEARCH FELLOW
Fixed Term, Two Year Appointment

#19,415 to #24,912

The School is a research-rich environment whose research is funded by
industry, EPSRC, and the European Union. We seek to strengthen our
research in the following area through the appointment of a Research
Fellow:

 Internet - Ref: RF6
Head of Group: Mr David Inman, 0171 815 7446,
  email: [log in to unmask]

MUSE Project Outline
------------------------------
The Web is a valuable source of information. This proposal looks at
enhancements such as:
 Filtering Web search results.
Current search engines often produce excessive hits, many of which are
not appropriate for the user. Filtering results according to analysis of
the content such as automated key concept / domain search or matching
hits to a user interest profile would produce an enhanced search engine.
This could potentially have a massive take up by the Web community, as
it would be generally applicable and useful.

Improved access to textual information for non-native English
speakers.
The major language of the Web is English, with about 90% of text in
English. Assistance to non-native English speakers, such as grading text
or multilingual summaries of text, would be valuable.

The Web as a language learner's resource.
Language learners need accessible content. Whilst the Web provides
extensive content, this is not graded by accessibility. A Web search
engine that used a user model of language, as well as the key words to
search for, and returned hits ranked by accessibility to the user would
open up the Web as a resource for teachers and students.

The appointee will join the NLP research group within the School where
they will be expected to undertake research and research-related
activities with a strong emphasis on publication and the generation of
research proposals. They will also be expected to undertake a maximum
of 6 hours of lab supervision / teaching a week.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dave Inman ([log in to unmask])An
application form and further details are available from the Human
Resources Department, South Bank University, 103 Borough Road, London,
SE1 0AA, or telephone: (0171) 815 6223 (24 hour answering service) or
email:[log in to unmask]
Please state clearly which of the areas you are applying for and the
appropriate reference number.

An Equal Opportunities Employer.
