As Social Policy Association Executive Committee link with ESRC, I'm
writing to draw SPA members' attention to the ESRC Training Board
Consultation Paper on Postgraduate Training which you can get from ESRC or
read on the Web at <http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ptd/remit99.htm>. ESRC TB will
be deciding on the future of its support for postgrad training this autumn
and it wants to hear the constituency's views about its proposals.
ESRC identifies five key issues which it plans to review:
-- the balance of ESRC support for PhDs and Advanced Course, and across
subject areas;
-- the level of student stipends, and problems of student
and post-doctoral recruitment and retention;
-- the balance between research training and vocational training, and the
scope for the Board to support new ways of delivering postgrad training;
-- the future purpose and value of the 'Postgraduate Training
Guidelines';
-- how to encourage and provide better support for part-time
studentships.
SPA members may also have other concerns about postgrad issues to raise
with ESRC. The consultation exercise closes on 16 July and responses can
be sent by post, fax or email to the ESRC Training Board at

to the SPA Executive to be taken into account in its composite
organisational response, please send them to me before the end of April so
that our May EC meeting can consider them. John Veit Wilson.
