re: the messages about CD rom packages and WWW availability of qualitative
data.
I must say that Clare Taggoram's email slightly concerns me. Whilst I am
happy about the wider availbility of raw data for research and teaching,
there are other issues which need to be aired.
As many of you know Qualidata has been working in the field of documenting
and archiving and disseminating qualitative data for at least 5 years now.
There are many implications for making data simply available on the web, an
obvious one being confidentiality. Others include re-use by people not
having been directlly inviolved in the research etc.
We would be happier if anyone wishing to make their data available would
come and discuss this with Qualidata first, so that we can give informed
advice about these issues.
As you all probably know, we are an ESRC sponsored Centre and all advice is
free. Furthermore, we will help to catalogue and disseminate information
about available qual data through our own Internet catalogue of qual data
resources in the UK and publicity. Furthermore we have designed and piloted
a number of study packs for teaching using data and information from qual
research projects and will be mounting them as www resources.

We have been experimenting with producing a structured set of web pages to
make qualitative data accessible to a wider audience and I did a poster
about this at the IOE conference in London. The work we've done so far
took qualitative data in a homegrown data analysis package and produced a
website which it is intended will be made available via CDROM. Of the
1300 web pages all but about 5 were generated automatically. We've
started looking at doing the same thing from NUD*IST.
