Have you looked at Leonardo DaVinci's anatomical drawings? A good book is:
Leonardo DaVinci on the Human Body: The anatomical, physiological, and
embryological drawings of Leonardo DaVinci by Charles D. O'Malley and J.B. de
C.M. Saunders. I have the 1997 edition by Random House (Wings Books division),
but it is copywrited 1982 by Crown Publishers. IBSN:0-517-38105-2.
There is commentary, as well as his writings, about the accuracy of the
drawings and understanding of the function (poor accuracy early in his career,
excellent later). I paid only $25 for it at a local science museum, and it's
well worth it.
