Tricia,
I am a PT in the US and I do a lot of vestibular evals despite the fact
that my facility does not own Frenzel glasses. I won't say that it is
easy to spot oculomotor deficits without them, it takes a lot of
practice, but it is possible. I generally sit rather close to the
patient and repeat the movements up to 20 times to get a good feel for
their control. For the patients with mild defecits, however, I still
have a tough time determining the deficit.
In summary, yes, you can do oculomotor eval without Frenzel glasses, but
I recommend you get them if you can!
Good luck!
PS, do you have a strong background in vestibular rehab? My facility
has deemed me as the "balance guru" after sending me to only 1 course in
vestibular rehab and dumping a bunch of patients on me. Needless to
say, I am not comfortable with the title and would really appreciate a
collegue with whom to bounce ideas off of.
