Having sent my message of good wishes to Otfried off-list, I now realise
from all the wonderful tributes I am reading that I missed a brilliant
opportunity to express my gratitude in public for his hard work, his lively
interventions, and ever helpful and friendly messages. So in addition to the
personal message I sent you, Otfried, may I add my tribute publicly to those
that are flooding in - and once again best wishes for all the future holds
in store.
Valery.

To Otfried and tutti quanti:
The news of Otfried's withdrawal from the list is sad indeed. It raises
the issue of the significance to any scholarly field of a list of this kind
(I can hardly even imagine how much hard work Otfried especially put into
it) and the recognition of that significance by those who measure
academic/scholarly performance, too often by out-moded criteria which
discount, needless to say, the wonderfully collegial and collaborative
activity exhibited in this case. New models of academic interaction and
perfomance are arising, and Otfried is a prophet -- I hope not "clamans in
deserto" for too long.
