I think part of the problem with Creator is that those of us trained as
librarians have it in the back of our minds that it is equivalent to
Main Entry (MARC filed 1XX). That is a holdover from the card file
days, and not even very useful in our OPACs (IMNSHO). I find myself
thinking in terms of MARC tags and mapping the DC elements to them in my
mind. Looking at the records I've created all of them only have 1
Creator field.
Creator is repeatable and does not have the strict requirements of a
main entry. So Creator would be anyone connected with the creation of
the work. Contributors could be a lower level of involvement. I think
many systems will combine searching on Creator and Contributor (just as
out catalogs combine 100 and 700 MARC fields). That is not to say there
is not a need for the 2 fields. Some local systems may well treat the
fields as separate.
Stu how does one get a DC T-shirt other than winning a contest?
Sincerely,
David Bigwood
