PATTERNS FOR IMPROVING EARLY SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE
A one-day Event organised by the BCS Requirements Engineering/Reuse
Specialist Groups
09.30-16.30, Wednesday 5th May 1999
University College London
Patterns are becoming an important weapon in the armoury of system
developers who wish to improve the productivity and quality of their
software systems. In simple terms, a pattern is a reusable encapsulation of
some expertise about the solution to a software engineering problem. A
pattern will often include a definition of the problem to solve, reusable
solutions (including source code) to that problem, examples of the
solution's use, and the possible consequences of applying the solution to
different situations. Numerous textbooks and commercial courses are now
available to teach patterns to systems developers. However, many of these
books and courses present software design patterns rather than patterns to
support the earlier phases of systems development such requirements
elicitation, system modelling and architectural design.
This event will examine the role of patterns in the earlier stages of
systems development. In particular it will explore patterns to support
processes during the systems engineering, requirements analysis and
architectural design phases of systems development. In the morning session,
invited speakers will present results of their work on patterns to improve
early systems development practice, including examplar patterns of this
work. In the afternoon session, small working groups will discuss some
typical patterns, to report back what is still needed to make patterns
reuse possible during early systems development possible. The event will
end with a panel session, to set an agenda for the use of patterns
throughout the systems development life cycle.
Who should attend?
Practitioners, vendors and academics with interests in patterns and/or
reuse throughout the systems development process. In particular, attend if
you use or want to know more about patterns for system reviews, defining
business problems, designing systems architectures, and developing
web-based systems. Due to space restrictions, the maximum number of
delegates will be limited to 65, with places allocated on a first-come,
first-served basis.
