BCS - Developing Countries Specialist Group
Annual General Meeting
17th May 1999 London
Dear member,
This year's AGM will be held on Monday 17th May at 7:00pm in the London
School of Economics. The AGM will be preceded by an afternoon seminar on
the subject of the International Development Markup Language (IDML)
initiative, which is based on the emerging XML standard for Internet
content (see earlier message for details). It is proposed that the first
45 minutes of the AGM be given over to a summary of the afternoon's
presentation by Hugo Besemer, our seminar speaker, as the subject matter
will be of interest to many members, not all of whom will be able to make
it to the seminar.
The second half of the AGM will focus on Specialist Group business. A full
agenda has yet to be finalised and any issues which you would like to see
addressed should be noted to myself before Thursday 13th May. One issue
which will definitely feature on the agenda will be the election of new
committee members. As always we are looking for 'new blood'; in particular
members with a bit of time to spend carrying out activities on behalf of
the group. Based on my experience of other BCS SG committees, PhD and
other research students can often provide solid input to groups such as
ours and also develop their professional skills and networks through such
involvement. So, come along and don't feel you are too 'junior' to take on
a responsible role.
We will be meeting in Room S50 of the St Clements Building of the LSE and
will finish the meeting no later than 8:30pm. Details of how to get to the
meeting place can be found in the seminar announcement message sent out 5
minutes ago.
I look forward to seeing you on the 17th May.

Please also send a one-line message confirming your attendance at the AGM,
the seminar or both as it is useful to have some idea of numbers.
