I remember doing research in Greece when the Macedonia issue was beginning.
There were large demonstrations with thousands marching in the streets of
Athens. T-shirts were being sold in the local tourist shops proclaiming
Macedonia is Greek.
Cze notes the issue of authenticity with re. to being a "real" Greek as
well as the issue of a biological relationship. For much of its history,
ancient Greece was a collection of rival city-states. In terms of biology,
some of the more recent definitions of ethnicity treat it as a social
construct based on shared values, material culture, religion, language,
with descent believed to be from a common ancestor. The relationship
between not just modern Greece, but also modern Europe and ancient Greece
is a complex one.
BTW, the term "ethnic Albanian" gets bandied about rather casually in the
media, but what is meant by this?
