Whilst I would agree with some of the sentiments expressed in the
postings , I would be _very_ careful about these generalisations.
For example, I wouldn't imagine there's much homophobia in the
changing room of the King's Cross Steelers RFC
(http://www.kwtelecom.com/kxsrfc/).
More substantively, here is also an issue of representations of
homophobia in tandem with the creation of hyper-masculine spaces to
liberate the group given the material dangers of the sport. The same
can be generalised to the level of 'army pubs', and the issues
about how society conditions individuals to perform tasks which
individually are deemed anti-social (acts of controlled violence) but
in certain circumstances are necessary to the survival of that
society (a just war) then expects individuals so conditioned to be
able to switch of from that instantly. Similarly, how does one
control the spread of emancipation from social conditioning where it
cannot be directed to the benefit of society (e.g. in 'army pubs' and
more generally, in acts of racist terrorism)?
