Geography and Environmental Management Research Unit
Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education
MPhil/PhD Research Studentship
Higher Education Institutions and Local Communities: the interrelationships
between Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education and Cheltenham
and Gloucestershire
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above
Research Studentship based in the Geography and Environmental Management
Research Unit.
Context
There has been much recent interest in the development of cultural and
educational industries and their implications for local and regional
development. Particular interest has focused on the impact of Universities
on their local communities. This topic falls within the interests of the
Sustainable Towns and Cities Group within the Geography and Environmental
Management Research Unit (GEMRU). The focus of the project is on analysing
the inter-dependencies between HEIs and the communities in which they are
located. These interrelationships are critical to the sustainability of
both HEIs and the local areas. With the establishment of Regional
Development Agencies and the imposition of student fees encouraging more
students to live at home, the links between HEIs and their local communities
is becoming increasingly important. HEIs not only provide advanced
education and training, research and consultancy, conference and meeting
facilities, and cultural and sporting activities for local residents,
employers and voluntary groups; they are also major employers in their local
economies.
Aims
The project aims to:
1. examine the nature of the interrelationships between HEIs and their
local communities in the context of the development of cultural and
educational industries
2. evaluate the social and economic impact of Cheltenham and
Gloucester College of Higher Education (CGCHE) on Cheltenham and
Gloucestershire
3. analyse the effect of the nature of the Cheltenham and
Gloucestershire area on the activities of CGCHE
Methodology
It will be the responsibility of the research student to formulate a
suitable methodology to meet the aims of the research. A mixture of
extensive and intensive research methods using quantitative and qualitative
data may be appropriate, such as the examination of literature and reports,
analysis of records, questionnaires and interviews and may include:
* reviewing the development of cultural and educational industries and
their local and regional impact
* development of a conceptual framework for examining the
interrelationship between HEIs and their communities
* examination of previous studies of the interrelationship between
HEIs and their communities
* analysis of the social and economic impact of the student population
on the local area in terms of eg demands for housing, services, and
employment
* analysis of the social and economic impact of employees of the
College on the local area in terms of eg travel to work and expenditure
patterns
* examination of the characteristics of the local area in terms of eg
population, industries, educational provision, cultural facilities
* analysis of the way the College has responded to the needs of the
local area in terms of eg providing advanced education and training,
research and consultancy, cultural and sporting events
* analysis of the use of College facilities (eg sports, meeting rooms,
catering, information services, studios and laboratories; residences) by
both local and non-local people and organisations.
