Call for Papers: Special issue on Electronic Commerce and Tourism
Journal: Information Technology and Tourism
Guest editors: Karsten Karcher, Imminus / Telewest, and Stefan Klein,
University of Muenster
Deadline for Submission of Manuscripts: 30 June 1999
Currently, Electronic Commerce (EC) is the dominant topic in the IS field.
EC is driven by a high level of public awareness as well as political,
economic and, to a lesser degree, technical initiatives and activities. A
look at programmes of almost any IT/IS conference shows that most topics can
somehow be related to EC, e.g. software engineering, AI, knowledge-based
systems, database management, workflow, groupware, etc.
In the upcoming special issue, we would like to look beyond the current hype
and encourage submissions to the following six areas:
1. What is new and specific to EC?
Inter-organizational systems, electronic markets, multi-media, electronic
shopping systems etc. have been around for 10 or more years and have been
adopted in tourism, so what is unique to EC, what contributes to its
apparent success?
2. What is specific to Web IS or Web engineering?
Much of EC is web-based. What are the specific requirements for the
development and maintenance of web-based applications?
3. Are there new and innovative EC applications in tourism?
Are there tourism specific approaches to EC beyond what vendors for physical
or digital products do?
4. Which successful business models for EC in tourism exist?
There are numerous indications of profound changes in the tourism business
model, e.g. flexible pricing, reverse auctions or co-operation. Is there a
methodological basis for developing business models? Are there templates or
successful examples in other industries that might be adapted?
5. How can the transition be managed successfully?
While most experts agree that tourism will be one of the major application
areas for EC, the electronic business activities of tourism organisations
will be less than 50% for the foreseeable future. How do companies manage to
build EC applications without endangering their traditional business, and
how can hybrid models of traditional and electronic business be sustained?
6. What is the impact of EC on market structure?
Business analysts predict profound changes in the tourism value
chain as a result of EC: Disintermediation, re-intermediation, new entrants,
shifting roles of participants, new power bases in the industry? What is the
evidence, what are underlying interpretative schemes or theoretical models
for explanation?
Submitted manuscripts must be original and not under publication
consideration elsewhere. Submissions should not exceed 10,000 words
including figures, tables, and references. Each figure and table counts for
approximately 300 words.
An abstract of about 250 words should be included with all submissions.
Authors whose articles are conditionally accepted to the Special Issue will
be asked to complete revisions in a timely manner.
An indication of potential interest and the tentative title would be greatly
appreciated for our planning of the issue.
Submission of full paper due: 30 June 1999.
To submit manuscripts to the Special Issue, e-mail the paper as an
attachment to [log in to unmask] in one of the following formats:
MS Word (any version), pdf, rtf. Non-electronic submissions should include 3
paper copies.
