1999 SPA Conference: Social Insecurity and Social Policy
Final Call for Papers: Deadline March 31 1999
The 1999 Annual Conference of the Social Policy Association will take place at
Roehampton Institute London from July 20-22. The conference is being
organised by Judith Glover and Lorraine Radford (School of Sociology and
Social Policy, Roehampton Institute), Hazel May (University of Leeds) and
Ros Edwards (South Bank University). Contributions are solicited on the
following streams:
violence and safety
welfare, risk and social capital
identity
stratification and difference
comparisons: geographical and historical
New Labour
technology
globalization
open stream
Plenary speakers are Betsy Stanko (July 20), Jeffrey Weeks (July 21) and
Claude Moraes (July 22). There will be symposia on gender and welfare states
(Birgit Pfau-Effinger, John MacInnes, Jane Lewis, July 20) and on 'Social
Insecurity: a State Problem?' (John Edwards, Jane Wheelock, Eithne McLaughlin
July 22). A range of special sessions will be organised, including SSP2000,
All-Party Parliamentary Group for Social Science and Policy, Engaging Different
Knowledges in Social Policy, ESRC Future of Welfare projects, Future
Directions for Social Policy Research, Subject Benchmarking. Meetings will take
place for special interest groups, including women and social policy, health
policy, comparative social policy and post-graduates. Academic publishing
advice sessions for prospective authors from Jo Campling.
There will be an opportunity for poster presentations with a timetabled slot
for authors to discuss their work with delegates. Delegates intending to make a
poster presentation should inform the secretariat (see address below) by
March 31 1999.

Abstracts of around 150 words (a printed copy, if possible together with a
clearly labelled disk in Word 6 or below or WordPerfect 5.1/5.2) should be sent
